Precinct wins Deloitte Top 200 Sustainability Award
Recognition highlights net zero carbon strategy and industry-leading sustainable initiatives
Precinct is proud to announce it has won the Sustainability Award at the 2025 Deloitte Top 200 Awards. The Sustainability Award, a category celebrating businesses that create long-term value through sustainable practices and strong ESG integration, marks a prestigious recognition of Precinct’s sustainability leadership.
Now in its 36th year, the Deloitte Top 200 Awards are New Zealand’s pre-eminent platform for recognising business excellence. Precinct was recognised for its comprehensive ESG strategy and sustainability achievements, including a clear pathway to Net Zero Carbon by 2030 that addresses both operational emissions and the embodied carbon of its developments. This recognition follows news earlier this week that Precinct has retained its position in the top five listed entities in Forsyth Barr’s annual C&ESG ratings for the third consecutive year, achieving an A+ score.
“Being recognised with the Deloitte Top 200 Sustainability Award is a tremendous honour for Precinct,” said Scott Pritchard, Chief Executive of Precinct. “It reflects the dedication of our team and development partners in making sustainability a core part of our business. We will continue to show ESG leadership, investing in innovation and working closely with our clients, investors, and industry peers, to deliver long-term sustainable value and positive impact.”
“Our team is incredibly proud to receive this recognition,” said Lisa Hinde, Head of Sustainability at Precinct. “Sustainability has never been more important – it’s a core part of our strategy and at the heart of everything we do. This award highlights the real impact of that commitment. True progress comes through collaboration, whether partnering with clients and our supply chain to cut emissions, innovating with low-carbon design, or increasing social value. We’ll continue to push the boundaries of sustainable development and operations for the benefit of our communities and the environment.”
Precinct has committed to achieving net zero carbon by 2030, covering both operational and embodied emissions. Central to this commitment is its leadership in measuring, benchmarking and reducing upfront embodied carbon in new developments. A standout example is the Deloitte Centre project (Te Kaha), which achieved a 67% reduction in upfront embodied carbon compared to standard benchmarks by prioritising adaptive reuse, retaining the internal structure, over a traditional knock-down and rebuild approach. This success highlights why embodied carbon, now accounting for more than half of Precinct’s annual emissions, is a top priority for long-term reduction. To accelerate progress, Precinct is introducing 10-year annual decarbonisation targets for key construction materials, including steel, concrete and aluminium, with implementation beginning in FY26.
In FY25, Precinct improved its GRESB score to 91/100, retaining its position in the top 20% of more than 2,000 participating global real estate funds and entities. The company also launched a portfolio-wide waste strategy to align with circular economy principles, and delivered New Zealand’s first NABERSNZ water ratings, achieving 4.5 to 5 stars across four commercial buildings. Additionally, to fund asset-level performance, Precinct supports its Client capability through its quarterly ESG reporting programme, which shares periodic data on energy, water and waste. It also runs workshops to help clients estimate and work toward their own NABERSNZ tenancy ratings, helping lift the standard of performance sector-wide.
Precinct has certified 13 buildings to 4, 5 or 6 Star Green Star standards, reinforcing its leadership in sustainable design. Two recent projects – BECA House (Te Paeroa o te Kawau) and the Deloitte Centre (Te Kaha), achieved 6 star ‘World Leadership’ ratings, with Te Kaha becoming New Zealand’s first mixed-use office and hotel development to reach this benchmark. BECA House features the portfolio’s largest rooftop solar array, contributing to 309kW of solar capacity across Wynyard Quarter.
In the capital, two new government office projects further demonstrate this commitment; Bowen House, completed in April 2025, is on track for a 5 star Green Star As Built rating, while 61 Molesworth Street, the future home of MFAT, is targeting 6 star post-completion in 2026. As part of its Living strategy, Precinct has also registered its first Green Star and Homestar targets for living sector projects, including student accommodation and build-to-sell residential.
